Some bags earn their names in marketing meetings. The Gucci Jackie earned hers on the streets of New York, tucked under the arm of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis so often that Gucci eventually renamed the bag in her honor. At our shop in Fukuoka, vintage Jackies are among our favorite Gucci finds — elegant, understated, and full of history.
The 1961 Origin Story
Gucci introduced the bag in 1961 under the name Constance — a soft, crescent-shaped hobo designed to sit comfortably under the shoulder. Jackie Kennedy adopted it as an everyday bag through the 1960s, and photographers caught her with it again and again. The association became so strong that the bag was rechristened the Jackie, one of the earliest examples of a celebrity truly defining a handbag.
The Piston Clasp
The Jackie's signature is its closure: a sprung metal piston clasp that slides to release the flap strap. It's tactile, a little mechanical, and unlike anything else in the vintage market — which also makes it a useful authenticity checkpoint. On genuine vintage examples the piston moves smoothly and the plating matches the rest of the hardware. A gritty, loose, or badly plated clasp is a reason to look closer.
Vintage Jackie vs. the Modern Reissue
Gucci relaunched the bag as the Jackie 1961 in recent years, slimmer and offered in petite sizes with an optional long strap. So which should you buy?
- Vintage Jackies — mostly 1980s-90s production — come in GG canvas with leather trim or in solid leather and suede. They're roomier, softer, and typically sell in the mid-hundreds to around a thousand dollars depending on condition, a fraction of the reissue's boutique price.
- The reissue is beautiful but costs several times more, and, in our opinion, part of the Jackie's charm is carrying a bag actually made in the era it defined.
Vintage GG canvas has also proven remarkably durable — many 30-year-old Jackies still have decades left in them.
What to Check Before Buying
- Corners and trim edges, where leather wear shows first.
- The interior lining, which can be sticky on some older Gucci bags (a known, fixable issue).
- The piston clasp's action and plating.
- Serial number formatting on the interior leather tab.
