The Hermès Evelyne has one of the most charming origin stories in luxury: it was never meant to be a fashion bag at all. Today it is one of the most requested Hermès pieces at our shop in Fukuoka, beloved for being genuinely useful. Here is everything worth knowing before you buy one.
From the Stables to the Street
The Evelyne was designed in the late 1970s by Evelyne Bertrand, then head of Hermès' riding department, as a practical bag for grooms to carry horse-care tools. That working origin explains its two most distinctive features: the perforated H on the front, which was originally there for ventilation, not branding, and the casual, unstructured crossbody shape. Hermès tradition even holds that the perforated side was meant to face inward; wearing the H outward came later, from customers who loved it. Few bags wear their history so plainly, which is a big part of the appeal.
Sizes at a Glance
- TPM (mini): tiny and charming; phone, cards, keys, lipstick. A favorite for travel days.
- PM: the most popular size, comfortably fitting a small wallet, phone, sunglasses, and a pouch.
- GM and TGM: larger sizes that can carry a tablet or small water bottle; less common but very practical.
Leathers and Generations
Most Evelynes are made in Taurillon Clemence, the softly grained, forgiving leather that suits daily wear beautifully; Epsom and other leathers appear too. Over the years the design evolved through generations: earlier versions have a non-adjustable strap, while the Evelyne III added an adjustable strap and an outside back pocket. Earlier generations often cost less and have their own vintage appeal, so do not overlook them.
What to Check When Buying Pre-Owned
- Strap: check edges and length; earlier straps are fixed, so confirm the drop suits your height.
- Corners and base: soft leather scuffs here first; light wear is normal on vintage.
- The perforated H: the leather around the perforations should be clean and uncracked.
- Stamps and hardware: details our team examines on every single piece during our in-house 7-point authentication.
