One of the questions we hear most often at our shop in Fukuoka is: “How old is this Chanel bag?” Unlike Louis Vuitton, which uses stamped date codes, Chanel used a system of serial number stickers and matching authenticity cards from the mid-1980s until 2021, when it switched to metal microchip plates. If you are shopping vintage, understanding that sticker is the fastest way to place a bag in time.
Serial Numbers by Decade — the General Pattern
Chanel serial numbers grew longer over the years, and the number of digits roughly tells you the era:
- 7-digit serials: Mid-1980s through the mid-1990s. This is the golden era of vintage Chanel — 24k gold-plated hardware, wonderfully soft lambskin.
- 8-digit serials: Roughly the late 1990s through 2021. Within this range, the leading digits climbed over time, so a serial starting with a low number is older than one starting with a high number.
- No sticker at all: Bags from before the mid-1980s often never had one — truly early vintage pieces are dated by construction, stamping style, and hardware instead.
We deliberately keep these ranges general: exact cutoffs vary slightly by source, and Chanel has never published an official table. The digit count and leading numbers get you to the right era; the rest of the bag confirms it.
How the Sticker Itself Evolved
The sticker is not just a number — its physical design changed over the decades, and that evolution is itself a dating and authentication tool. Early stickers were simple white labels with a clear film over them. Later versions added gold speckles, then a dark X-shaped cut pattern designed to shred if anyone tried to peel the sticker off and move it to another bag. The typeface, the film, and the placement inside the bag all follow patterns we have learned from handling hundreds of examples.
Authenticity Cards: Helpful, Not Proof
Most Chanel bags from this era came with a small dark card whose number matches the sticker. A matching card is a nice bonus — but here is the honest truth: cards and stickers are among the easiest things for counterfeiters to copy. A perfect-looking sticker on a fake bag is common. That is why our team never authenticates from the sticker alone. We examine the stitching count, the quilting alignment, the hardware stamps, the leather quality, and the interior construction — the things that are genuinely hard to fake. The philosophy is the same one behind the 7-point process our team in Japan uses.
What If the Sticker Is Missing?
On bags 25-40 years old, stickers do fall off. A missing sticker does not automatically mean fake — but it does mean the bag must stand entirely on its construction. When we sell a bag with a missing sticker, we say so plainly and photograph the spot where it once sat. Flaws and absences are always photographed at our shop; we would rather lose a sale than surprise a customer.
Buy the Bag, Not the Paperwork
