The Speedy is the most-loved Louis Vuitton bag ever made — and the one we sell the most of. But the four sizes look almost identical in photos, so buyers regularly order the wrong one. Here is our honest sizing guide, based on handling hundreds of Speedys at our shop in Japan.
The four sizes at a glance
- Speedy 25 — 25 × 19 × 15 cm. The cult favorite. Fits a long wallet, phone, keys, small pouch and sunglasses. Best as an everyday city bag.
- Speedy 30 — 30 × 21 × 17 cm. The classic “first Speedy.” Adds room for a small tablet, a water bottle and a cardigan. The best all-rounder.
- Speedy 35 — 35 × 23 × 18 cm. Work-friendly: a 13-inch laptop in a sleeve fits diagonally. Great for commuters and light travel.
- Speedy 40 — 40 × 25 × 19 cm. A genuine weekender — two days of clothes. Originally designed as travel luggage.
Which size holds value best?
On the vintage market the 25 and 30 command the strongest prices because demand is broadest. The 35 and 40 are the bargains: you get dramatically more bag and more leather for a similar — often lower — price. If you want maximum Louis Vuitton per dollar, a vintage 35 or 40 in good condition is the smart buy.
Vintage vs. new
A new Speedy 30 retails well above $1,500. A well-kept vintage monogram Speedy from the 1990s typically sells for $300–$600 — and the older canvas and honey-patina vachetta leather have a character new bags simply do not have. Japanese-market bags are especially prized because of how carefully they tend to be kept.
What to check before buying vintage
- Handles and leather trim: even honey patina is good; dark, sticky or cracked leather is not
- Interior: look for peeling or stickiness in older linings
- Zipper: should run smoothly end to end
