Hermès is famous for six-figure Birkins and years-long waitlists — but the maison has always made wonderful everyday pieces too. On the vintage market from Japan, real Hermès starts at a few hundred dollars. These are the four lines we recommend to first-time Hermès buyers.
Picotin: the effortless bucket
Introduced in 2002 and inspired by a horse’s feed bag, the Picotin is Hermès at its most relaxed — open top, Clemence leather that only gets softer, and no logo shouting. The PM (18) is the everyday favorite; the MM (22) fits a small tablet. Vintage/pre-owned Picotins typically sell for a fraction of boutique price, and colors like orange, blue jean and red are perpetually loved.
Bolide pouches: Hermès for under $300
The canvas Bolide pouch line (mini to GM) is one of the best-kept secrets in the vintage market: genuine Hermès, made in France, usually $150–$400. They work as cosmetic cases, clutches or bag organizers — and they make a superb first Hermès or a gift.
Fourre-Tout: the canvas workhorse
“Fourre-tout” literally means “carry-all.” These sturdy cotton-canvas totes (PM/MM/GM) were the original quiet-luxury beach-and-market bag. Light, washable-adjacent, and endlessly useful — vintage examples usually run $200–$500. If you want the most usable Hermès per dollar, this is it.
Herbag: the two-in-one classic
The Herbag pairs a Kelly-style leather flap system with swappable canvas bodies — originally sold with two sizes in one set. It gives you the Kelly silhouette and turn-lock hardware at a small fraction of Kelly money. Check the canvas edges and the leather flap corners when buying vintage.
Authenticating everyday Hermès
Hermès stamps (“HERMES PARIS MADE IN FRANCE”), craftsman blind stamps, saddle stitching and hardware engraving are our reference points — the same rigor we apply to Louis Vuitton. Every piece is sourced from licensed Japanese auction houses and inspected in-house.
