Luxury backpacks used to be a contradiction. Louis Vuitton settled the argument twice: once in the 1990s with the Montsouris, and again in the mid-2010s with the Palm Springs. Both come through our shop in Fukuoka regularly, and customers often ask us which one to choose. Here is our honest comparison.
The Montsouris: The 90s Original
Launched in the 1990s and named after a Paris park, the Montsouris is the classic drawstring-and-flap backpack in Monogram canvas with vachetta leather trim. It came in three sizes, from the small version that works as a city day bag to the largest, which can genuinely carry a light day's gear.
- Style: relaxed, vintage, a little bohemian. The drawstring top and buckled flap feel wonderfully analog.
- Practicality: lightweight, with a simple open interior. No laptop padding; this is a lifestyle bag, not a commuter bag.
- What to check: vachetta condition on the flap and straps, the drawstring, and interior wear. The date code helps place its production year; see our date code guide.
- Value: vintage Montsouris backpacks are typically far more affordable than a new luxury backpack, which makes them a popular first vintage piece. Note that Louis Vuitton later reissued an updated Montsouris; the 90s originals are the ones covered here.
The Palm Springs: The Modern Statement
The Palm Springs arrived in the mid-2010s and quickly became a streetwear-era icon, especially in its Mini size.
- Style: sleek and contemporary, with black leather trim instead of vachetta and a more structured, zip-front design.
- Practicality: the black trim is low-maintenance and weather-tolerant, and the Mini doubles as a shoulder bag for many owners.
- What to check: on pre-owned examples, look at the coated exterior surfaces and the condition of the zips and straps.
- Value: because demand for the Mini stayed high for years, pre-owned prices are stronger than for the Montsouris, though usually still below buying new.
Which One Is Right for You?
- Choose the Montsouris if you love true vintage character, honey patina, and a gentler price.
- Choose the Palm Springs if you want a modern, low-maintenance bag with a fashion-forward silhouette.
There is no wrong answer; they are simply different decades of the same good idea.
How We Make Pre-Owned Safe
Backpacks are heavily counterfeited, so sourcing matters. Every bag we sell comes from licensed Japanese dealer auctions, where we buy under Japan's Kobutsusho secondhand dealer law, and then passes our in-house 7-point authentication, detailed in this article. We photograph all flaws, back every order with a full-refund authenticity guarantee, and ship to the US in 2 to 5 days.
