We sell vintage Louis Vuitton for a living, so you might expect us to tell you it is a can't-miss investment. We are not going to do that. After years of buying and selling at our family shop in Fukuoka, here is our honest view — the same one we give friends.
The Case For
There are real reasons vintage Louis Vuitton holds value better than almost anything else in fashion:
- Retail prices keep rising. Louis Vuitton raises new-bag prices regularly, and each increase tends to lift the ceiling under which pre-owned pieces trade.
- Supply of true vintage is fixed. Nobody is making more 1980s and 1990s bags. Discontinued models — the Noé in old configurations, 90s shoulder bags, early Epi colors — only get scarcer.
- Durability is real. A 30-year-old monogram Speedy in good condition is still a fully functional bag, not a fragile collectible. Demand comes from people who actually want to carry them.
- Classics stay classic. Speedy, Noé, Alma, Keepall — these have been in demand for decades, which is the closest thing resale has to a track record.
The Case Against
Now the part many resale blogs skip:
- Past performance guarantees nothing. Values have generally risen over the long run, but resale prices fluctuate with fashion cycles, currency swings, and the broader economy. Trend-driven models can fall as fast as they rose.
- Condition dominates. A bag carried daily will wear, and wear affects resale. If you “invest” and use the bag, expect the two goals to pull against each other.
- Transaction costs are real. When you eventually sell, fees, shipping, and dealer margins take a slice. A modest paper gain can disappear at the register.
- Fakes poison careless purchases. A counterfeit is worth nothing. Buying below-market from unverified sellers is how people end up with expensive lessons.
Our Honest Advice: Buy to Use
Buy a bag you love, at a fair price, in honest condition, from a seller you trust — and use it. If it appreciates, wonderful; that is a bonus, not the plan. What we can say is that vintage Louis Vuitton is one of the few fashion purchases where, if bought sensibly, you are likely to recover a meaningful share of your money years later. Most fashion recovers close to nothing.
How to Buy Sensibly
- Favor classics over trends if resale matters to you — our Speedy guide covers the most liquid model of all.
- Buy from regulated supply. We source through licensed Japanese auction houses under Japan's Kobutsusho secondhand dealer law — part of why Japan is the best place to buy vintage LV.
- Demand authentication and a guarantee. Every bag we sell passes our 7-point in-house authentication and carries a full-refund authenticity guarantee.
- Care for it. Storage and vachetta care protect value more than anything else you control.
We photograph every flaw, ship to the US in 2-5 days, and price to condition honestly. If you buy that way — starting with our Louis Vuitton collection — the worst-case outcome is that you owned and enjoyed a beautiful bag. There are worse investments than that.
