Louis Vuitton Noé Bucket Bag Guide: History, Sizes & What to Check Vintage

Of all the vintage Louis Vuitton bags that pass through our shop in Fukuoka, few have a better origin story than the Noé. In 1932, a champagne producer asked Gaston-Louis Vuitton for a bag that could carry five bottles of champagne — four standing upright, one nestled upside down in the middle. The result was a drawstring bucket bag so practical and so pretty that, nearly a century later, it is still in production and still beloved.

A Bag Built for Champagne, Perfect for Everything Else

The Noé's genius is its simplicity: a single bucket-shaped body, a leather drawstring closure, and a shoulder strap. No zippers to break, no clasps to tarnish. That simplicity is exactly why so many vintage examples from the 1980s and 1990s are still going strong today. We source ours from licensed Japanese auction houses — sellers regulated under Japan's Kobutsusho secondhand dealer law — which is one reason Japanese vintage stock tends to be so honest and well-kept.

The Three Sizes

  • Noé (large): The original champagne-carrying size. Roomy enough for a water bottle, a book, and everything else. Great for travel days.
  • Petit Noé: The most popular vintage size by far. Noticeably smaller and more shoulder-friendly, it works as an everyday bag for most people.
  • Noé BB / mini versions: Later, smaller iterations. Less common in true vintage form, but charming if you find one.

If you love the drawstring look but want something more structured, it is worth comparing the Noé against a classic Speedy — our Speedy size guide is a good place to start.

What to Check When Buying Vintage

Because the Noé leans on leather in a few high-stress places, here is what we inspect on every piece:

  • The drawstring: Original vachetta drawstrings dry out and crack with age. Many vintage Noés have replacement strings — that is common and fine, but it should be disclosed. We always photograph ours.
  • The base corners: The bucket shape means the bottom corners rub. Look for wear-through in the canvas.
  • The strap and its attachment points: Check for cracking where the strap meets the body.
  • The date code: Vintage Noés carry a stamped date code inside. Our date code guide explains how to read it and confirm it matches the era of the bag.

Honeyed Patina, Honestly Photographed

A vintage Noé with deep golden vachetta is genuinely beautiful, but patina should be even and the leather supple, not brittle. If you buy one, keep it out of direct sun and stuff it lightly when stored — our vachetta care and storage guide covers the details.

Every Noé we sell passes our 7-point in-house authentication, ships from Japan to the US in 2-5 days, and is backed by our full-refund authenticity guarantee. You can browse current pieces in our Louis Vuitton collection — and if a champagne run is in your future, we can confirm the large Noé still fits five bottles.
